No I’m not crazy, I’m just a Stage Manager!
July 18, 2011 tags: Rehearsal, Stage Manager, Tech by The Practical Artist

Stage Managing is a compilation of acquired skills such as patience, script analysis, organization, obsessive compulsive disorder, physical strength, extreme attention to detail, and being able to answer ANY related question that begins with “What if…”

I’ve been asked numerous times: “Wait a minute, wait a minute, there are people out there who WANT to be stage managers?!  WHY would anyone want to do that?”

So, true, there’s no Tony for Best Stage Managed Production.  True, it’s the only tech position required to be at all rehearsals and all performances.  True, SMs are responsible/in charge of almost everything to do with the show once it opens.  True, 99% of common-folk [non-Thespians] have absolutely NO IDEA what a Stage Manager even is, and 60% of non-SM-Thespians don’t fully understand what the job entails. True: you are commonly and respectfully referred to as GOD.

One of my favorite SM quotes that says it all: “Perhaps, therefore, ideal stage managers not only need to be calm and meticulous professionals who know their craft, but masochists who feel pride in rising above impossible odds.” [source]

Yes, there are sadistic individuals like myself who thrive off of being a Stage Manager.  I may curse the designers who obviously haven’t read any rehearsal reports [and sometimes, not even the script!!!], I may secretly want to gouge actors eyes out when they can’t memorize their damned lines or are inconsistent in their blocking, I may want to assassinate board ops who can’t respond to a “standby,” and I may threaten to strangle the director during tech if s/he doesn’t stop screaming in my ear when I’m trying to call a scene.

But…when a quick change problem can be solved with delayed calling of tech cues, when an “impossible” scene change can be done in record time while carefully choreographed, when an actor finally doesn’t trip over their “trouble line” – or when they simply say “thank you,” when a director is beaming on opening night, and – admittedly – when a board op misses a called cue because they “didn’t hear” the standby, I love my job.

There is nothing more powerful, humbling, and satisfying than to be in the back of a theatre after a successful show, eavesdropping on the audience while they wonder just who it is the actors and director are congratulating on Opening Night.  Unnoticed, and in charge of more than the avid Theatre Goer could ever know, perhaps that is why Stage Managers are called GOD.  It’s not an easy job, but perhaps one of the most rewarding…and we don’t have to deal with that “in the spotlight” stuff.  I wear Black, therefore I’m invisible and a force to be reckoned with.  Not everyone’s in this game to make a name for themselves: I bet you can name over 10 directors, 10 actors, 10 playwrights, and maybe 5 designers you haven’t worked with…how many stage managers you’ve never worked with can you name?  Remember that the next time you are tempted to give attitude to your SM, and respect the unique and difficult job they do.  Remember to say “thank you” when you steal their pencils, it’s always appreciated.

Just closed a 15 show run of SPAMALOT and man was that one hell of a show. It was great to be calling a big show again. Crew of 6 with everything from flies and spotlights to a trap door lift. This cast of 20 amazingly talented individuals definitely kept me on my toes, and getting a chance to work with the incomparable Jennifer Werner (Broadway's Book Of Mormon) and Thomas Cannizzaro (Broadway's Spamalot) was amazing. Thanks to everyone involved.

Now I've been in rehearsal for They're Playing Our Song which opens next week. It was fun being in rehearsal during the day and then going to call a show that night. Stay tuned for more information on that show!

So I am back in Massachusetts, finally, for a week. The last 2 months I've been on the road with American Family Theater's 2013 Spring National Tour of Cinderella and It has been amazing. I spent two months with 7 ridiculously talented people, eating, sleeping, performing and driving together. Lots and lots of driving.

We spent most of our time on in the Deep South, including 3 weeks in Florida which was the icing on the cake. It was really cool to return to many of the theatres that I performed at in the fall on tour with CLASSICS. Its always awesome working with some crew members who remember you and are overall a breeze to work with.
Happy be on a mini vacation back home and gearing up for my summer at TriArts in Sharon Connecticut. I'll be heading down there next week to begin rehearsals for SPAMALOT. I'm so excited to be working on a big musical again the cast of 20. I'll be there for the full summer which is great. And maybe going on the road again in the fall? Who knows?
Check out the photo gallery for photos from Cinderella and upcoming blog posts with some photos from some of the venues.

Music rehearsal began on Tuesday for my touring production of Cinderella I'll be traveling with for two months. The show is definitely fun.

The songs are pretty catchy.... and have definitely been getting stuck in my head. Ha. My cast is great. My cast is a rediculously talented group of 6 that has been keeping me thoroughly entertained since Monday. Breakfast has become a fun "get-together" each morning, provided by the hotel downstairs. (Not to mention to crazy waitress who is just a sweetheart.)

We finished blocking the show today, and start working on adding in costumes and polishing scenes. We'll tech this weekend, and hit the road Monday.  This tour should be great. I'll post my tour schedule soon, but we'll be spending close to 3 weeks in FL. Delightful!

Final Weekend In MA

3/21/2013

This is my final weekend staying at home in The Berkshires. It was a nice 3 months home. Got to catch up with some good friends, (some I haven't seen since last summer) and made a few new ones. Will definitely be nice to get out of the house and go back on tour.

Will also be nice getitng back to theatre. I've had a bit of a hiatus during the winter, and went back to working part-time at a ski-resort I worked at in college. Was nice to have something to "fall back on" but I'll be looking forward to getting my feet wet again in musical theatre land.

2 more days of work, packing, then off to Philly on Monday. Wish me safe travels!

Website published. Check
Signed contract for summer gig. Check.
Finish Taxes........
Pack for tour.........
Buy iPad........

Ok, maybe I'm not completely "on-schedule" for finishing up everything I need to before heading back on the road, but I work best under pressure. At least I was able to book a summer gig before I hit the road, so that's one less thing I'll have to worry about.

I head to Philadelphia in three weeks to begin rehearsals on the Cinderella tour. So excited. In that time I need to finalize my taxes and submit them, and hopefully get my iPad before I leave.

I'm working on paperwork for the spring tour, while also finalizing paperwork from my last tour that I'm revamping. Should be good.

Now, just to figure out how to pack black clothes and still be able to deal with 4 weeks of the tour in Florida.
